There are a number of tourist companies that allow you to do a Statue of
Liberty visit. There an endless things that you can see during your visit.
The one thing that you can take away from your first visit to see Lady
Liberty is the history behind the monument. While on your visit, there are
a numerous tour guides that will tell you all about the statue.
When you plan a visit to the Statue of Liberty there are several things
that you should know and have planned out in advance. Before seeing the
Statue it would be a good idea to do some research so you have an idea of
its value and what you will be seeing. Some of the main things to know
about the statue is that it was shipped to New York from France in pieces,
three hundred and fifty pieces to be exact. When all pieces had been
delivered it took almost four months for that statue to be erected.
Visitors were not permitted to visit Lady Liberty on September 11th, 2001.
Liberty Island was in fact closed to all visitors until December 10 of that
year.
When visiting the Statue of Liberty with children you should know that
strollers are not permitted on the Promenade or in the Observatory. There
is plenty of room to run around and look at all the great sights. For
children between the ages of seven to twelve there is a Junior Ranger
program available. As a junior ranger your child will learn about the
Statue of Liberty. The program takes about an hour. There are both indoor
and outdoor activities within the program that children can choose from.
While taking the program your child will be given a booklet that can be
completed. Once the booklet is completed you can have the book signed and
stamped by a Park Ranger and you get a certificate showing that you
completed the program. The booklet can be downloaded from the internet as
well.
The key is having a good visit to the Statue of Liberty you must give
yourself plenty of time. A typical day is about five to six hours and this
would include a visit to both the statue and to Ellis Island. However, if
you wish to visit Liberty Island only, you should allow about two to three
hours. You will need to take a ferry ride to Liberty Island and there is
always a line up for the ferry, particularly during peak tourist months. It
is recommended that you get to the ferry approximately two hours prior to
your tour to ensure that you arrive on time. Tours must be booked and it
would be a waste if you didn't arrive on time and couldn't complete the
tour.
Due to the high volume of people that visit Liberty Island in a day it is
recommended that you pack a lunch. Standing in line at concession stands
could actually take all of your time as the lines can get quite long. There
is plenty of room for people to picnic and it is must more cost effective
as prices on Liberty Island can be quite high.
